We headed further South towards the Alps coming across signs showing the Tour De France would be coming through these areas on the following days. We overnighted in Poligny, a town famous for Comte cheese (a favourite of ours), set at the foot of a limestone plateau in the Jura region. Stage 19 of the Tour was finishing here the following week so there were lots of cycling related displays all over.
The municipal campsite was next to the La Maison Du Comte – a fabulous museum dedicated to all aspects of Comte cheese making, from the landscape and cows, to the production process and ageing of the cheeses. Our visit ended in a tasting where we learnt how to distinguish between older and younger cheeses.
We were heading to Courcheval where we had read that we should be parked up several days before the Tour comes through to secure a space, but we got sidetracked at Annecy which looked too good to miss on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon. It is a very scenic alpine town on the edge of Lake Annecy and after spotting everyone was cycling around the lake, we decided a night here was a must. We got the last parking space on a lakeside campsite and enjoyed a couple of hours cycling around part of the lake and had a look at the pretty old town. There was a little beach in the campsite and Colin enjoyed his most scenic yoga practice site ever as the sun was coming up the following morning.
